The Happy Zombie shared a free tutorial and pattern for these "Penny Pockets" last holiday season. They are perfect for giving little presents in for neighbors or friends all year round. Or you can simply create a happy little pennant.
I know I've been laying it heavy on all the handmade holiday gift ideas. I really detest seeing all the Christmas trees go up in the department stores even before I've heard a kid say, "Trick or treat!" However, I also know that if I don't start thinking about Christmas a tiny bit early, all the plans to make handmade goodies evaporate into the frenzy of baking and shopping. SO. The long-winded explanation is that I simply adore the above link.

Design Freebies - Textures
Lately in my own work I've been exploring textures. I'm not quite ready to bring any of my creations to my etsy shop yet, but adding this new dimension to my digital art has been intriguing.
This journey has led me all around the web looking for high-res resources to create textures from. Today I stumbled upon a very interesting site called Lost and Taken. The thing that sets Lost and Taken apart from the myriad of free texture sites out there is the obvious thought behind the textures they offer. Most sites will only have the old standards, concrete, paper, fabric. Lost and Taken offers unique, inspiring, textures such as light blurs, and bubbles.
They also have a lively blog that contains links to all kinds of useful resource sites for digital designers, check it out here .

Swag #60 - Royalty free fonts that are actually cool!
We all love fonts, but we don't all have the dosh to fork out the money to use them legally in our work. Often I find myself in love with design I've made, but can't submit my work with a font I don't have the rights to. After I pout and stamp my feet for a while I usually turn to Divide by Zero.
The Divide by Zero font collection was started in 1993 by Tom Murphy VII (Tom7 to his website followers.) Tom is a musician, author, photographer, artist of every medium, guy with a PHD in computer science, and probably the only random person I've ever made a point to check back on his website every few months to see what new. He is also gracious enough to offer his font collection with only a few even handed limitations on them. He also offers something else you almost never get to know about other fonts, what inspired the font or where he was when he first drew them. Although sometimes the name says it all, as it is with one of my favorites, "This boring party."
So stop reading and go directly to the Divide by Zero website. Be sure to click through to Tom7, although beware, you will be sucked into a world of reading about the prolific amount of projects this gentleman has completed or has on the burner.

Swag #50 - Vector Freebies from Colorburned
It used to be really hard to find quality vector tutorials, brushes, and swatches online. If it wasn't ugly, it was low quality, and barely worth the time spent searching for it. More recently we've seen great sites like GoMediaZine, a site which has a tutorial or advice for just about any topic that a working digital artist will face.
But - I've blogged about GoMedia before - today is all about Colorburned. Talk about fantastic, useful, high quality, FREE patterns, brushes, .SVG's and more. Colorburned is run by artist (and young republican?) Grant Friedman who in addition to all the freebies also blogs about his recent work on the site. Check out the freebie list here - and don't miss my personal favorite, the illustrator watercolor brushes seen below.

Etsian Blue Pandemonium wrote a short little piece on her blog Mytutorlist about the choice of adding advertising to her blog, which can be a tough one. I know I felt very torn at first, being the type that hates hearing their favorite song in a commercial. Yet it wasn't hard to realize that between being the owner of my own business, being a mom two a rambunctious two year old, and blogging; my time was at a premium. Value your time! Really someone should make a coffee mug that says this, I would buy it. It's one lesson many etsy shop owners learn the hard way.
