Since I've graduated from college, I miss fall-time school supplies shopping. I pick up pretty pencils or blank notebooks with excitement, only to realize that I don't *really* need to buy them since I don't go to school anymore (which is why I'll be going shopping soon to buy a bunch of discounted school supplies for disadvantaged kids in our area... at least someone will get to enjoy cute school supplies!).

I recently found out about Art House through Blue Bicicletta. I was instantly stunned by the power of inspiration this website and organization wields. They host projects such as the Literary Project, Sketchbook Project, Self-portrait Project, etc. which call for submissions of art (for a small-ish) which are then shown (all of the submissions!) at their new headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. Art House says,

Art House creates massive, nationwide art projects that tie hundreds of artists together – and anyone can participate.We started two years ago with the goal of bringing art to the masses. Since we started, we have interacted with thousands of artists from around the world, all brought together with the common goal of creating art and sharing it with each other.

In their FAQ's they encourage everyone to participate,

1. Tell us about yourself. Why "JoE"?I started making art as a hobby and selling them on eBay before I discovered Etsy three years ago. Etsy has allowed me to take my hobby into the next level, and I'm now working towards being a full-time artist, primary working on printmaking. My real name is Joseph, and most people know me as Joe, which is a pretty common name. So to differentiate myself, I began signing my name as JoE on all my work when I began selling my work on eBay and Etsy.

2. In your profile, you talk about bring art to the masses. How do you go about doing that? I grew up reading a lot of comics and my childhood ambition was to be a comic book artist. Discovering the work of pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol let me see the possibilities of merging comics and art together. I have always believed art should be accessible to the masses, just like comics and other forms of popular media do. Etsy allows me to do exactly that as I do not have to worry about the costs of hiring an agent or paying for expensive gallery space, thus I could make my art affordable to everyone. I have buyers from countries even as far as South Africa, Bosnia and Chile!

3. Where does your motto, "Art for All, and All for Art!" come from? The motto comes from Alexandre Dumas' novel The Three Musketeers, whose motto is "One for all, all for one". Isn't it T. S. Eliot who said "Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal"?

4. What inspires your work? As I mentioned earlier, I was brought up reading lots of comics and watching lots of cartoons on TV, so I was basically a pop culture junkie! I guess that shows through my work.

5. If you were an animal, what would you be? I would want to be an Okapi. I think it would look good as a print!

6. What's your favorite color?If I had to choose one color, it would be black because I think it is a color that can go with any other color or stand alone on its own.

1. I am a huge literature geek. I majored in English in college. I love reading. I adore the smell of books. Especially the old ones bound in magic and dust.

5 Things to Do to Help Your Handmade Business Neighbor

I love the handmade community. I have found so many supportive, inspiring people who are doing what they love. I enjoy promoting independent artisans on this blog. Here is a list of five things you can do to help the indie business "next door." What keeps this community strong is the mutual support of the members. Let's help handmade stay strong on the web.

1. Write an e-mail or convo of encouragement to a new shop on Etsy or Artfire. Offer to swap business cards to place in outgoing packages.
2. Highlight an artisan you feel deserves more recognition on your twitter or blog. Send them an e-mail with a URL to your blog.
3. Do you have a favorite artist on Etsy or Artfire? Maybe you want to link to their shop on your shop announcement. Or ask them if they would like to trade links.
4. Have you recently bought a handmade item? Consider reviewing the item on your blog. Or simply send a thank you e-mail to the artist.
5. List a PIF item. According to popular Etsy legend, when the company first started one of the artists did something nice for another shop owner and started the tradition of offering something for free. Create a listing for $0.20 (the lowest possible on Etsy). You can choose to have the buyer pay for shipping or not, it's your choice. Do something nice for a stranger and ask them to do something nice in return. Make sure to tag the item as a "PIF" in the title, description, and tagging section. You may want to explain the concept in the description.

Anyways, do something nice for another seller this week.

2. Sign up for Outright for FREE to better organize and simplify bookkeeping.

3. Sign up for Project Wonderful for FREE. Create an ad for your Etsy shop. You can bid for sites that are currently offering free ads. Or invest some money in advertising. You can spend as little as you want (as little as $0.01 a day!) or as much. It's completely up to you. You can even advertise on the Daily Etsian by clicking here.

4. Choose one social networking site (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to work on this year. Create a game plan of small steps to make this happen successfully.

5. Post in a forum, asking for a critique of your shop. Or ask an artistic friend. Reflect honestly about what you can do visually to make your shop more attractive. Think better photographs, more concise descriptions, better tagging for SEO, more cohesive backgrounds for your photographs, etc. Change one thing about your shop today.

6. Edit your photos so you can get the best quality, most realistic color, etc. Try using Picasa from Google which is 100% free. My sister adores this program. Picasa is easy to use and a good, basic photo editing. Available for download with Windows, Mac, and even Linux (Beta). Edit one photo today.

7. Create tags to include with all your packages. Make sure your e-mail address and URL are clearly visible.

8. Wrap up packages to look like presents. People love presents - even those they bought for themselves. Nice packaging makes one feel luxurious. Plus, you probably already own wrapping paper (or tissue paper) and ribbon (or twine or yarn). Think of cheap alternatives - maybe go shopping at the dollar store. Offer free wrapping for presents.

9. Evaluate your avatar. See my post about the importance of avatars here.

10. Make sure you are utilizing all the image and tag availability. For example, one Etsy you're allowed five photographs for each listing. Use all five. If you're allowed 14 tags, use all 14. If you can't think of 14, use the thesaurus.

Twitter Marketing

Twitter. Social networking. Branding. All sorts of words that have been buzzing around the webosphere and in the real world too. In this post, I'm going to focus on the relationship between Twitter and branding your handmade business. I've been doing some official research on this project (meaning I read all sorts of articles, Etsy forum posts, and tutorials about Twitter). Here's what I've gathered:

Be unique and memorable. Write about a variety of things. Include little tidbits from your life. You don't have to be too personal. I cracked up recently over a Tweet that was raving about his delicious dinner. You can stick in people's minds by making them think, making them laugh, or interesting them in something scintillating. Talk about your handmade business, making crafts, your crazy kids, your crazy dog, anything you like. Share your favorite quotes, words of wisdom, or fascinating trivia.

Post regularly. There is no rule of thumb, but between several times a week and 1-3 times a day seems reasonable. Don't overwhelm those people who aren't following many users. Remember, people will stop following you if you post too much. People will forget about you if you post too little (this is my personal problem...).

Interact with others twitter users. Social networking is called "social" for a reason. You can stay in a bubble, but it's more fun and effective to make friends.

Add contacts on twitter. These can be people who follow you or those you find interesting/part of the target audience. Many people use websites that gather more followers on twitter. I'm slightly suspect of these sites and people who use them. However, these people have reported great results. Timothy Adams gives a good overview here about these types of websites.

Please, oh please don't just post about your latest blog entry, listing on Etsy or Artfire, or new treasury. I know you're proud and want to promote your business. I'm proud of you too. However, most people don't want to read links. That being said, Twitter can help promote your business. Many people on Etsy forums report getting 20-30 more views when they twitter about an item. It should be noted that many people reported not seeing any spike in sales from twitter, only an increase in viewers. Just don't let your business be the only subject. I think sharing bits and pieces of your life as an artist is natural and useful in letting people get to know the person behind the business. The personalized approach to the handmade business is one big reason many people shop at Etsy and Arfire.

Let Twitter express your brand on a day-to-day basis. Remember the list of adjectives you made back to describe your handmade brand (see this post)? Keep those in mind when twittering. If you sell children's clothes, maybe include more posts about your kids. If you sell nerdy, geeky items, write a bit about the Star Wars marathon you had last week. Target your posts to be to attractive to the ideal customer. Chances are, if you enjoy creating your products, twittering in that "theme" shouldn't be a problem.

When necessary, use hash tags (#) so you can be found in Twitter's search engine. Some useful ones to know are #etsy, #handmade, #myetsy, #artfire, #giveaway. The hash tags acts as a little stop sign for Twitter, "Stop! Look at me" so when people search for the above keywords, they just might find your little corner of the world. Remember: too many hash tags can be obnoxious. Use only when the tags add value to your post. Concentrate first on sharing information, knowledge, daily life, etc.

A New Year for Handmade Business

A new year. A new beginning. What are your resolutions for this year? Do you have any big plans for your handmade business? Here are some ideas to expand your business. Some the ideas have been around for while now and perhaps you've been kicking around some of them, procrastinating. Seize the day (and the year), by trying them out presto pronto!

In a recent article on Etsy's Storque about adVintageous (see article here), the seller, Allison, speaks of her success with little business cards advertising her business on Etsy. Check out Moo.com (which partners with Etsy to use photos from your Etsy site) or another website such as VistaPrint or 123Print. It's a relatively small investment (between $4-$20 before shipping) that could lead to future sales.

This fall, Etsy started uploading listings to Google's product search engine. This way, people who are shopping around for an item using key words on Google can stumble across your products on Etsy. All you have to do is enable this feature by clicking here. This is a completely free and easy way to ensure your products get more exposure!

Another free way to optimize your handmade business on Etsy is to utilize Google Analytics. Basically, Google just figures out all sorts of statistics such as the amount of people clicking parts of your shop, the most popular items, the most popular time people visit your shop, etc. It's a wealth of information that you can use to your advantage. I love these decorations and the Swedish traditions described in this article. They feel so cozy. Here's a quote I thought you might appreciate:

One of my favorite parts of keeping the Daily Etsian up and running is meeting the artists that supply the inspiration and beauty behind all the posts. One these artists is Jillian who makes things all sorts of gorgeous over at 22pages as well as over here on her blog.

- Tell us about yourself. What are your two best characteristics?
I grew up on a fruit farm in the rural lands of north central Washington state. My interest in art has been as much a part of me as the color of my eyes and from an early age I developed a passion for illustration. When the time came I left my hometown and spent a lot of time traveling, going to school, wearing many hats, and moving boundaries. I now live in Portland, Oregon and although it is a completely different world from where I grew up, I feel like I have found a place that supports the child artist within me. I try to find amusement and wonder in everywhere I go. I don't take myself too seriously and prefer to be surrounded by people who are good at laughing.

- What do you do outside of Etsy-ing?
I spend a lot of time buying, listening, and talking about music. I am also a photographer so I spend a lot of time taking pictures as well as looking at other peoples photographs. I love that I stay at home with my two children who keep me on my toes and offer endless entertainment. I love being outside and am constantly trying to find balance between our urban surroundings and my desire to explore the natural world. Luckily, I can't think of a better place to live that offers the best of both worlds.

- Why "22pages"? What's behind the username?
It came to be out of a literary reference from one of my favorite books Catch 22. I feel that the paradox of being in a catch 22 is more revolving and frequent than people realize. I try to imagine moving through the paradoxes of my life as easily as turning the pages of a novel.

- What inspires you? What gets those creative juices flowing?
You can't live in portland without seeing somebody being successful at doing what they love. It is so inspiring to constantly meet people who are encouraging their creative sides. Lately, my inspiration has come from a mixture of many different things: being in nature, the re-use movement. I'm inspired by children and their beautiful little minds. Music, politics, human rights, and conscious living all have a hand in not only what I create but also the motivation behind what I do. I am inspired by people who put themselves out there because they believe in a greater good. Although my art isn't a political statement by any means, I do believe that our society has been set in "disposable" mode for far too long. I am at my most creative when I find something with potential that has been discarded.

-What is your favorite quote(s)?

- What's your favorite writer, musician/band, and artist?
Writer: Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is my favorite writer. I love early- to mid-century American writers like Steinbeck, Kerouac, and Brautigan. for the past year or two I've become obsessed with graphic novels, especially the works of Craig Thompson and Marjane Satrapi.

Musician: that's a difficult question! I listen to a wide range of music, I love old country music, gypsy folk, French ballads from the 40's and I can't seem to get through a winter without lots of Nina Simone on my playlist. The best way to answer this question is to maybe give an idea of what I'm listening to as of late: the Decemberists, Laura Veirs, M.Ward, Neko Case, Laura Gibson, the Octopus Project, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sufjan Stevens, Megafaun, and I can't stop listening to Alela Diane.

Artist: I'm crazy about the depression era photography of Dorothea Lange. I love illustrations of The Jungle Book by John Lockwood Kipling as well as the work of Sir John Tenniel and more recently Carson Ellis. I am fascinated by the ongoing works of James Turrell.

- What is your favorite part of being a handmade seller?
I love being able to create something one of a kind that will find its place in somebody's life. I'm also not starting at the beginning. My piece starts somewhere else, often times in another century. It will have traveled through the hands of many people before it finds me. Then I add to its story and pass it along, hoping it will pass through many more hands.

My two best characteristics that keep me going would have to be passion and tolerance.

2. What do you do outside of Etsy-ing?
I've got lots of loves - first and foremost - my family. I've been happily married for two years to my amazing soulmate and we have an incredible little girl who is 10 months old, Isabella, who my shop is lovingly named after. It was because of my want to use only natural products for her where my shop was first inspired. I'm also very close to my parents and siblings, as well as my husbands family and we love to get together and go to the state park around us or just hang out and do a dinner together. I also try to stay politically active and am concerned with free markets and sound money.

I mostly love to spend time in the mountains in the west - which is pretty far from where I am [Florida] I try to get out as often as I can to camp, hike, see small towns, pick flowers, collect rocks, splash around in rivers. While I'm not out camping in the west, I'll visit the beach here or get my favorite lunch [subs and cupcakes] and eat them at the park.

I'm classically trained on the flute, and love to do gigs, teach and learn new styles of music. I also enjoy playing piano, violin and whatever else catches my ear. Music is very much a part of my creative being and was my first love. My husband plays guitar and bass guitar and we love to sing and play a good Pink Floyd song together while our little one plays at our feet and dances along.

Anything that involves things with naturalness - the way things used to be made. We started our own organic garden, I like to use natural body care products and find fresh produce. I'm really interested in alternative building materials, especially with cob, and my husband and I are in the beginning planning stages of a future cob house. I also try to paint and sew - neither of which I'm good at but I like to try anyhow!
3. What inspires you? What gets those creative juices flowing?
Music, textures, rustic colors, old glass jars, nature, mountains, cool weather.
I love stumbling upon new patterns to knit, it really gets me inspired to create new, stylish but functional things to wear. As far as soap goes, nature really does inspire me and makes me search out the benefits of natural products on the skin and neat things to color my soaps [like blueberry fibers!] I've also got my collection of [earthwear] that I'm beginning to build up that is based on the idea of creating beautiful, natural art to wear out of items found in the earth.

4. What is your favorite quote or motto?

5. What's your favorite writer, musician/band, and artist?
It ranges from classical to bluegrass, rock to symphonic. Bach and Haydn, 30 seconds to Mars, Pink floyd, Deathcab for Cutie, Switchfoot, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Howard Shore, Lucia Micarelli.

As far as writers go, my favorites lately are Tolkien, Ron Paul, Stephenie Meyer, Philippa Gregory.

My favorite painter is Claude Monet.

6. What is your favorite part of being a handmade seller?
I love being able to create things with my hands and things that useful to other people. I don't sell anything I wouldn't buy myself and I enjoy being able to provide a natural, handmade alternative to mass-produced storebought items.

2. What do you do when you're not photographing, blogging, tweeting, or Etsy-ing? Look for inspiration within my daily routines or travels.

3. What is your favorite part of each day? Early morning when the sun is up in time to wake me, no cars on the street and lots of birds outside and a hot cup of tea with a dash of honey to warm my hands.

5. When did start collecting images for "Record the Day"? I have always been obsessed with magazines, designers, packaging and all things pretty so I have some images I have treasured for over 15 years!

This is a fundraiser for my 3-year old nephew, Gavin, who is battling Tay-Sachs Disease – an extremely rare genetic disorder (with no known cure) that progressively destroys the brain and nervous system.
